Section 6 - Impact

  • Are arrangements in place to monitor the impact of improving LLN skills both on your organisation's objectives and on individual members of staff?
  • Have measurable indicators of success been determined?
  • Are literacy, language and numeracy part of any governance processes?

Examples of evidence

  1. For example, using or modifying existing data collection systems such as:
    • HR Performance Framework or Local Workforce scorecard initiative.
    • Data collection linked with external audits / monitoring, such as the Healthcare Commission's 'Standards for Better Health', Clinical Negligence Service for Trusts (CNST, compliance with statutory and regulatory legislation.
    • Internal data collection systems such as ESR / ORACLE (for data such as sickness / absence, learning and development record).
    • Other internal sources of data collection linked with clinical governance (such as rates of healthcare acquired infections), risk management and incident reporting, Complaints.
    • Staff and Patient Surveys
  2. For example, the number of drug errors, employees successfully completing NVQs, reductions in wastage, rates of sickness absence, number of staff with Personal Development Plans.
  3. For example, ensuring that responsibility and accountability for LLN is an integral part of clinical / corporate / integrated governance processes.
