Working with the trades unions

Trades unions can play an important role in encouraging and supporting staff as they improve their LLN skills.

Unions are trusted by their members and can provide serious credibility for courses and providers.

Union Learning Reps (ULRs) can work with learners and providers to:

• Support and engage them
• Ensure that course content is contextualised and flexible
• Explain the benefits of learning to employers and employees
• Assist with drawing up agreements.

UNISON Learning and organising services (LAOS)

This body co-ordinates trade union education and lifelong learning opportunities for members.

This includes training and development for union reps as well as personal and career development courses ranging from Skills for Life through to professional qualifications.
