The results of the initial assessment can be compared with the required job skills from the KSF. This identifies the starting point for the learning and indicates the appropriate learning and development programme, as well as providing appropriate evidence for the KSF.

Three main intervention points currently used by trusts and Strategic Health Authorities are:

• Induction
• Appraisal/Personal Development Review
• Prior to training and development programmes
  

Assessment tools are useful:

• as part of the induction process with an individual or a group
• as part of an appraisal/Personal Development Review
• prior to an NVQ course
• prior to or during other training and development
• at the introduction of new equipment, technology or working methods
