Which tools to use

The various tools available have been contextualised to suit the workplace. There are generic workplace tools and target specific tools for Healthcare Assistants and support workers (HCAs).

These tools can be ordered through dfes@prolog.uk.com or 0845 6022260, or use the external link box 'order the Skills for Health assessment tools'.

Skills check

Skills Check is a tool to help identify whether someone has LLN needs. It gives a snapshot of the level outcome, after which a full assessment is required. It may be paper based or electronic and will take about 15 minutes.

Initial assessment

For initial assessment, Skills for Health's generic workplace tools and the contextualised HCA tool can be utilised across the health sector.

These tools will help identify the skills level of a member of staff against the National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy. Initial assessments may be paper based or electronic and will take approximately 30 minutes each.

Spiky profiles

Members of staff will almost certainly have different strengths, areas of improvement and levels of reading, writing, language and numeracy skills. These are termed 'spiky profiles'.

It is best practice to ensure qualified tutors/trainers undertake the assessment process with learners and provide the appropriate feedback.
