A focus on the development of the nation's skills base, particularly in the area of LLN has been a high priority across the UK for several years.
As recently as 2006, a major review of skills in the UK, the Leitch Review, found that more than a third of all adults don't have the equivalent of a basic school leaving certificate. That means that there are many people whose levels of skills (in areas such as reading, writing, communication, IT and using numbers) are such that they cannot function and progress effectively at work.
That is why the latest LLN strategies place a strong emphasis on LLN supporting employability skills. ie those skills that enable people to find and progress in work. LLN is also a key feature of all the latest skills strategies across the UK.
